How a plot moves through Tanah Ledger.

Land papers in West Sumatra villages are often kept in one office, copied by hand and argued over at the boundary stone.

The record

We keep one signed record per plot. Each boundary point, witness and transfer is written once and signed by the people who were there.

  1. 1. SurveyThe council walks the plot with two neighbours and marks each corner.
  2. 2. RegisterThe boundary record is written and signed before any paper is issued.
  3. 3. TransferA sale or inheritance is entered with the witnesses who saw it.
  4. 4. ReviewOnce a year the village checks that every plot still matches its neighbours.
